This O level success story happened in 2014. Just like most students, Aiden Chong was forced to take up tuition due to his poor grades. Read more about how he managed to succeed below:
When Aiden Chong joined my Math class in 2014, he was a totally unmotivated student who had been consistently failing his A Math (Additional Math). He was not even interested to attend tuition, but his mother signed him up for both Math and Combined Science classes at Intellicat. He had to take O level that year, and he was still doing quite poorly for these subjects.
Fast forward 6 months later, Aiden was the first student to run happily to our tuition centre, after getting his O level results. He was still in his school uniform.
These are his improvements:
Combined Science – A1
E Math – A2
A Math – From fail to B4
How did he improve so much?
At Intellicat (Hougang/Kovan), we operate in small class sizes. I offer customised teaching to each student. When Aiden first joined, he was very weak in Algebra, while the rest of the students have a stable foundation. Instead of teaching the whole class the same topic, I guided him to build up his Algebra foundation first. At the same time, I found out from him which chapter his school teacher was teaching and I provided further guidance on that chapter so that he would not lag behind in school. He was also able to ask me lots of questions in class to ensure that he understood the topic well.
I prepared my own worksheets for each Math topics, ranging in difficulty level. When Aiden first started out, I gave him the easier one. This boosted his confidence as he realised that Math is actually manageable after he can solve most of the questions. Slowly, I progressed to more difficult worksheets. I always started off by giving some examples before he attempted the questions. I encouraged him to practice more questions at home, so that he could ask me more questions during lesson time.
It is impossible to improve in Math without hard work. I am impressed that Aiden slowly regained his confidence in Math and put in more hard work. Though he sometimes still tends to slack, giving excuses that he has a lot of school work to do, constant reminders and nagging still works for him. Slowly but surely, he practised more questions, gained more confidence, asked more questions and in the end, the results have shown.
I wonder who will be our O Level Success story for the year 2015?
